Abigail Meredith’s debut portfolio elevates traditional, hand-done illustrations by combining the whimsy and grit of classical techniques with fresh digital detailwork and modern presentation. Inspired by the ink and watercolor pieces of artists like Beatrix Potter, E. H. Shepard, and Helen Craig, Abigail’s multimedia work focuses on quirky, anthropomorphic animals in detail-rich scenes. Every piece has a story, and every creature a personality. The mediums are typically a combination of gouache and ink, or paper collage- an intentional choice for Abigail, who has a BFA in graphic design. Hand-done work retains the artist’s energy and love for experimentation, especially noticeable in her texture choices and story-centric details. She also highlights these elements through digital painting. Abigail layers texture and adds to story by digitally enhancing her pieces. Painting and editing her studio work allows for an even greater embrace of character; highlighting everything from the sharpness of villains to the warmth of trusted companions. Additionally, Abigail uses modern presentation to evoke a sense of gallery and remind viewers that illustration is an artform in and of itself.
